Nutrition Alert

Dr. Kim Hapke, ND

Dr. Kim Hapke grew up in Minnesota. Her early interests were far from medicine and included theatre, literature, and poetry writing. For a few years she worked as a costumer. But an onset of symptoms as well as a growing realization she would be happier working with people more than her hands led her to Portland to study naturopathic medicine at the National University of Natural Medicine.

After graduation she spent several years practicing in Portland, OR. In addition to her naturopathic degree she sought out further training in working with the body/mind connection at the Process Work Institute in Portland, studying a body-oriented form of psychotherapy. She brought this training back to NUNM where she taught in the psychology department for seven years and to her practice where she helped people make meaning out of the symptoms they were experiencing and supported their health with herbs and nutrition.

After the birth of her son, the city didn’t feel as sustaining as places closer to nature. She left Portland for Central Oregon where she lives and has a practice in the sweet little town of Sisters, serves as a consultant in physician education and research and development for Metabolic Maintenance Products, lectures and writes about natural medicine for audiences professional or not, and spends a lot of time amongst the trees.

Laura Lewis, MS

Laura Lewis was born and raised, mostly outdoors, in the San Francisco Bay Area. She started her undergraduate career with dreams of becoming a zoologist, but followed her scientific curiosities towards much smaller subjects, cells and molecular biology. This led to a graduate study of mammary biology, exploring the relationship between lactation and breast cancer. Her graduate thesis, “A Proteomic Perspective on Development in the Mammary Epithelium” was published in 2012, earning her a Master of Science from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.

She went on to work as both a biology teacher and a freelance editor for non-native English-speaking scientists, preparing for peer review and publication in American Journals. This work prepared her well for editing and writing technical documents for Metabolic Maintenance. Writing consumer-facing copy is a new endeavor for her, but she is relishing the opportunity to connect with the health-conscious customer, while satisfying her own hunger for information by staying abreast (no pun intended) of the latest research on nutrition and longevity!
